Serguei Alex Oushakine studied history, political theory, gender, and anthropology in Russia, Canada, Hungary, and the United States. Oushakine’s current research examines transitional periods in Russia’s twentieth-century history and explores cultural manifestations of identity in Soviet and contemporary Russia. His new areas of research focus on postcolonial authoritarianism in Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, the practices of late Soviet consumption, the political mobilization of popular culture in Soviet Russia, and socialist nostalgia.
